Cabo ... Cabo ... Cabo ...

So I am trying to decide on a vacation to Cabo, Mexico.  I can probably get a 1 or 2 bedroom condo in my resort condos for $70-$100/night.  The flight will be about $400-$500, but I can probably use points.  I'll need to figure it out this week.

Anyone want to go?

Academy Awards: Overall

Well, I should give a synopsis and opinion on how the Academy Awards went.  From the hosting standpoint, I was pretty disappointed.  I felt for James Franco, who came off as a little shocked and overwhelmed.  I also felt for Anne Hathaway, who came across as a little too peppy and pleasing.  They did okay.  But, they underwhelmed and won't be back again.  Stick to comedians, I guess.

The show was not a big surprise.  I think most of the categories were pretty standard and the favorites won.  They were saying expect some shockers, but I guess they say that every year.  In the end, no big shockers in my book.

On to the next topics.

Academy Awards: Best Picture

Steven Spielberg is the presenter. Very vanilla.

The King's Speech: slow, but poignant.
Black Swan: dark and dramatic.
True Grit: needing to be a little better.
127 Hours: slow, but incredibly pulling.
Inception: big, enjoyable, and action.  Suspenseful.
The kids are alright: enjoyable popcorn movie.
Winter's Bone: independent.
The Social Network: Big ticket, over-hyped.
The Fighter: great acting, and package,  but not what the academy likes.
Toy Story 3: enjoyable, fun.

The winner is ... The King's Speech.  It wasn't too much of a shocker for me.  I picked them to win, although I am not (as usual) a fan of what is picked as "the best".  Well done, though.  Well done.

Academy Awards: Best Actor

Presented by Sandra Bullock, winner of last year's award for Best Actress, she (like Jeff) actually spoke to the nominees.  It wasn't as good as Jeff, but she did a good job.

Javier Bardem: Biutiful.  A surprisingly good actor.  He doesn't look it, but has played various roles well.
Colin Firth: The King's Speech. He did an excellent job in this picture and is truly deserving.
Jeff Bridges: True Grit.  He is much more than the Dude.  Last year was his year, but he continues to do well.
Jesse Eisenberg: The Social Network.  A newcomer.  He will have more time to improve and to win.
James Franco: 127 Hours. James has played so many interesting roles.  He continues to bring great creativity and fun to his roles.

The winner is Colin Firth.  No surprise and well deserving.

Academy Awards: Best Actress

Jeff Bridges presented this award.  He spoke directly to the nominees as he introduced them to us.  He did an incredible job.  Not a big shocker, was it?

Annette Bennett: The Kids are alright.  Brilliant job.
Nicole Kidman: Another good performance.
Jennifer Lawrence: Winter's Bone.  I'll have to watch this and follow-up on Jennifer.
Natalie Portman: Black Swan.  A favorite by the fans and my pick.  Crazy great actress.  Incredible.
Michelle Williams: Blue Valentine.  Great actress.  Great actress.

This was won by Natalie.  She was very gracious in her acceptance speech.  She has such talent and a long future in the field.

Academy Awards: Best Director

Ahhh, Hillary Swank, a personal favorite actress.  She introduces last year's winner (and first woman winner), Kathryn Bigelow to help present.  The winner, wasn't a major surprise as it was to Tom Hooper for The King's Speech.  Ha!  But, with all of they hype and pomp, it was really between Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) and David Finch (The Social Network).

Academy Awards: Best Song

Each of the nominees were able to have a song presented.  I wasn't very impressed with some of the music.  However, Randy Newman was the most deserving (not only because of the # of nominations, but because of the song).  I thought he has done an excellent job and has been passed over in a few of the years past.

Congrats, Randy (Toy Story: We Belong Together).

academy Awards: Best Original Score

Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman presenting.  2 big time actors and 2 big time class acts.

All of these nominees were incredible.  You don't realize until you stop to listen to the music afterwards, just how beautiful and incredibly important it is to movies.

I figured this would go to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.  They were by far the favorites.  I enjoyed the music and felt like it was a bigger part for Inception (Hans Zimmer), but was amazed by Reznor and Ross.

Presented by Scarlett Johanson and Matthew McConaughey.  The Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing were both won for the movie Inception.  They went to: (Editing) Richard King and (Mixing) Lora Hirschberg & Gary Rizzo.

Academy Awards: Best Original Screenplay & Best Adapted Screen Play

My choices -
Best Original Screenplay: Inception
Best Adapted Screenplay: Toy Story 3

The winners -
Best Original Screenplay: The King's Speech - not surprising.  This is the year for this movie.
Best Adapted Screenplay: The Social Network - not surprising.  Again, this is the year for this movie.

Like I said, it is not surprising.  These 2 movies are Academy Awards darlings.  I thought they were well done.  Not overly inspiring, but well done.

Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actors

Reese Witherspoon.  Very well looking and very well spoken.  Classy.  Classy.

I predicted Christian Bale.  I think it should go to him, but Geoffrey Rush is good, as well.
And the winner is ....  Christian Bale.  He has done such an excellent job and is an increcible actor.  His acceptance speech wasn't as good as Michelle, but he deserves his time.

On My Own ... Anne Hathaway ...

Fun stuff.  I am not sure what I think about James Franco in a dress.  He is much better looking in a suit or a super villain outfit.  Excellent job, though, for Anne Hathaway on her singing and comedy.  And ... no thanks to Hugh Jackman!  :-)

Academy Awards: Best Animated Movie

Delivered by Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis.  A parting away from Tom Hanks and Kirk Douglas, you are back at the younger generation and you feel it.  It is good.  They have done a good job.

The winner, as expected (and predicted by me) was Toy Story 3.  You can't go wrong with the winner of 2 other awards (Toy Story & Toy Story 2).  Are we done?  No more Toy Stories?  Hmmm .... You can't go wrong.  :-)

Toy Story 3

Academy Awards: Opening - James Franco & Anne Hathaway

Look at these two.  You get personality, perfection, enjoyment, creativity ... and you get it together for the night.  This is going to be fun. I don't know if you could've chosen a better couple of people for this.

James Franco  Anne Hathaway

Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress

First off ... Kirk Douglas.  Wonderful seeing a legend.  He was incredible and high-lair-i-us!

So far the presenters are as good as the nominated!

My choice and the winner is Michelle Leo.  Wonderful job in the Fighter and very personable on stage.  She was very deserving and enjoyable.

Helena Bonham Carter, Amy Adams, Hailee Steinfield, Jacki Weaver ... all deserving, too.  Well done.

Melissa Leo  Kirk Douglas circa 1962

Academy Awards: Best Art Direction & Best Cinematography

Best Art Direction: My pick for this was Harry Potter, but I wasn't surprised to see it go to Alice in Wonderland.

Best Cinematography: My pick and the winner is Inception.

No major surprises.

Tom Hanks was absolutely delightful.  They are doing a good job with this so far.
